Do you ever ask yourself these questions?
You’re not alone. The truth is 70% of what we say to ourselves about ourselves is negative. Can you believe that? If you’re reading this you probably can.
Most people don’t think there’s anything they can do about their negative thoughts and feelings. They think they feel bad because of their environment, their relationships, their job, how much money they have, or how they were raised.
The truth is what really makes us feel bad is WHAT WE SAY to ourselves about our environment, our relationships, our job, how much money we have, or how we were raised. We can’t change those things (instantaneously, anyway) but we can change what we’re telling ourselves about them. We can change our self-talk.
Why does this work?
Because the brain believes everything we tell it, without question. It doesn’t matter if it’s true or false. Not only that, but the brain’s neural pathways actually change based on the thoughts you think and the experiences you have.
When you choose to lock on to new optimistic messages, your brain agrees without question and then rewires itself so that those new messages become a part of how you think. The new neural pathways that are created will make it easier and easier for you to continue to think positively. Your brain is lazy in this way. It prefers to use the neural pathways that are used the most often. So the more you practice positive thoughts, easier they become.
What’s the alternative?
By continuing to practice negative self-talk, the brain continues to build and use those neural pathways, which creates more and more negative feelings and thoughts. You may start to feel trapped, go into a downward spiral or even a deep depression.
Just by changing a few habits of thought, however, you can build those new positive neural pathways and begin to live the life you’ve always wanted. Suddenly your brain starts telling you, “You can,” instead of “You can’t,” and possibilities you didn't see before just start flooding in.
How do I know this works?
I began teaching classes on positive thinking at a business college in Santa Rosa over 25 years ago. Business schools have a notoriously low retentions rate. They are made up of mostly non-traditional students who haven’t finished high school, never went to college and are often overworked and underpaid, so it’s understandable that many of them end up dropping out. However, we quickly noticed during this time that the students that took my course on positive thinking didn’t drop out. For this reason the president of the college required everyone enrolled at the college to take my course to graduate. During the years that I taught my class the retention of the school went up to 93%. 93%! That’s pretty unheard of along business college lines. But that’s what the power of positive thinking can do.
Since then I’ve gone on to teach this material and train tens of thousands of people including clients like Kaiser Permanente, Wells Fargo, State Farm and Sonoma State University. I’ve seen personally the changes that people are able to make in their lives simply by changing the way they talk to themselves. My simple but powerful message focuses on helping us understand how our mind works and how to use the amazing tool we call the brain.
In this course, I will lead you on an exploratory journey that brings you face to face with your own brain to gain startling new insights that will help you clearly see what’s blocking you. Best of all, you’ll learn how to use your new-found knowledge of the brain to create an astonishing leap into the life you want. It’s not magic, but learning how to talk to yourself the right way can produce magical results in your life! I will teach you to make simple changes in how you frame your thoughts. Because of the nature of these brain strategies, the results can be life-changing!
What You'll Learn
Hi! I teach life-changing workshops about how to use the new brain science to transform your life: end negative thinking, improve focus and clarity, enhance problem solving, and simply be happier. I have compiled the most useful discoveries about the brain to help you become that person you have always wanted to be. I was a professor and dean for more than 20 years and began teaching this course for college students to help them reach their full potential. As the field of brain science grew over the years, so did this course.
"It sounds simple, but the effects can be rapid and powerful. Several of our staff, and physicians, found some of the effects life-changing. It led to an improvement in teamwork and morale and positive attitudes on the unit. As a result, I have developed a positive approach toward improving areas in my personal and professional life that I had previously figured would never change, but now are making some positive steps.”
- Maury Schulkin, Medical Director, Kaiser Permanente
“I truly appreciate all Steve has done for me and our people at State Farm:
He really has made a great positive impact on me and our team.”
–Greg Jones, Supervisor of Administrative Services, State Farm Insurance
